
Researchers at CeMM and the University of Vienna developed AI-powered 'tissue clocks' that estimate the biological age of human organs by analysing microscopic architectural changes in tissue images.
The study, published in Nature Medicine, utilised 25,712 images from 983 individuals across 40 tissue types, achieving a mean prediction error of 4.9 years for biological age.
The team successfully linked these tissue-specific aging patterns to blood-based gene expression, potentially enabling early disease diagnosis and monitoring for conditions like kidney failure and diabetes.
