India Faces 73% Rise in Diabetes Cases by 2050

India currently hosts 89.8 million adults with diabetes, the second-highest count globally, with projections indicating a 73% increase in the national disease burden by 2050.

A study of 225,955 individuals revealed diabetes prevalence rates of 17.9% among those under 35, 13.3% under 30, and 9.8% under 25, alongside 107.8 million pre-diabetic adults.

Healthcare expenditure related to diabetes reached USD 9.83 billion in 2024, prompting experts to advocate for early screening and lifestyle interventions to mitigate long-term economic and health impacts.
