Sony CFO Lin Tao announced that the company will stop producing physical discs for PlayStation games starting in January 2028 due to the ongoing shift toward digital content.
Digital downloads accounted for 78% of Sony's full-game unit purchases in the fiscal year ending March 31, 2026, compared to a sharp decline in physical sales since 2008.
Sony executives stated they do not anticipate a negative financial impact from the move and are currently repurposing disc manufacturing facilities to produce optical microlenses.
