Research presented at the 2026 European Society of Cardiology Congress links high blood levels of the sugar substitute xylitol to a 57% increased risk of major cardiovascular events.
The study of 17,700 people suggests that xylitol may increase platelet stickiness, potentially raising the risk of blood clots that can block flow to the heart or brain.
While not definitive proof of causation, the findings follow 2023 research that similarly associated the sugar alcohol erythritol with higher risks of heart attacks and strokes.
