Trump Signs Executive Orders Restricting US Birthright Citizenship

President Donald Trump signed two executive orders on August 6, 2026, to limit birthright citizenship and target commercial birth tourism, weeks after the Supreme Court struck down a previous directive.

The orders deny citizenship to children of foreign government employees, terrorist group members, and those born to mothers engaged in commercial transactions to ensure birth on US soil.

While the Migration Policy Institute estimates 22,000 to 26,000 birth tourism cases annually, the American Civil Liberties Union condemned the move as unconstitutional and a violation of the 14th Amendment.
