The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has linked high consumption of ultra-processed foods (UPFs) to increased risks of obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases.
Union Minister of State for Health Prataprao Jadhav informed the Lok Sabha that UPFs are considered a modifiable risk factor for various adverse health outcomes.
The Dietary Guidelines for Indian, 2024, officially recommend that consumers minimize UPF intake and avoid frequent consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages to improve health.
