E20 Ethanol-Blended Petrol May Reduce Fuel Efficiency by 6%

Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari informed Parliament on July 30, 2026, that petrol blended with 20% ethanol can reduce vehicle fuel economy by 2% to 6%.

A study conducted by ARAI, SIAM, and Indian Oil Corporation Limited found that while fuel efficiency drops, E20 fuel offers 30% lower carbon emissions and improved acceleration compared to E10.

The government confirmed that engine durability tests on BS-III, BS-IV, and BS-VI vehicles showed no failures, though older models manufactured before 2016 may require routine replacement of specific rubber components.
