A study by IIT Madras researchers found that financial cybercrime victims in India often include highly educated professionals rather than just careless individuals.
Victims surveyed included IT workers, bankers, doctors, and management professionals who experienced financial losses ranging from a few thousand rupees to over ₹1 crore.
Researchers noted that fraudsters exploited stress and fear to trigger an engineered brain freeze, and called for better institutional response systems.
