The Broward County school district began the 2026 academic year with 180,000 students, marking a decline of approximately 11,000 students compared to the previous year.
Charter schools in the district also experienced a dip, starting the year with 2,100 fewer students, according to Superintendent Howard Hepburn.
Collectively, Florida's five largest school districts lost 67,000 non-charter students between the 2023-2024 and 2025-2026 school years, a trend often attributed to expanded voucher programs.
