Kerala-born Los Angeles City Council member Nithya Raman defeated Mayor Karen Bass to become the first Indian-American and South Asian mayor of Los Angeles.
Raman secured 460,772 votes, representing 52.70 per cent, against Bass's 47.30 per cent in the county election returns.
Her victory means the two largest cities in the United States, Los Angeles and New York, are now governed by mayors of Indian origin.
