The Donald Trump administration announced sanctions on August 18, 2026, against ICC President Tomoko Akane and senior trial lawyer Abdoulaye Seye for investigating non-member state officials.
Pursuant to Executive Order 14203, the measures freeze U.S. assets and restrict access to the U.S. financial system for nine of the court's 18 judges and other senior staff.
The ICC condemned the move as a flagrant attack on judicial independence, while the U.S. warned it would also sanction organizations collaborating with the court.
