An 83-year-old tea plantation in Tinsukia, Assam, became the first in India to commercially sell homegrown matcha at auction following a July sale.

Named Matcha Assamica and grown from native Camellia assamica leaves, the product is processed using traditional Japanese techniques and machinery.

The initial 5 kg lot sold for ₹15,000, and the Tea Research Association plans to help other Indian tea estates adopt similar cultivation methods.
