Renowned Nepalese mountaineer Nirmal Purja died on August 1, 2026, after an avalanche struck a 10-member climbing team on Broad Peak in Gilgit Baltistan.
The avalanche occurred at an altitude of 7,000 metres on July 30, claiming the lives of Purja and his climbing partners, Pur Bahadur Gurung and Nima Sherpa.
Nepal Prime Minister Balendra Shah expressed condolences for the tragedy, which also resulted in the deaths of five other Nepalese climbers among the 10 missing individuals.
