The Supernumerary Seats Scheme introduced in 2018 raised women's representation among undergraduate engineering students at the 23 IITs to nearly 20% by 2020.
In 2026, women were allotted 3,814 out of 18,861 IIT seats, representing 20.22% of total allocations compared to 20.15% in 2025.
A recent study found that the scheme has increased representation of disadvantaged caste groups and encouraged high-ranking women to choose traditionally male-dominated disciplines.
