The Supreme Court declared that private universities must serve a public purpose rather than operate for profit, ordering states and Union territories to submit audited financial accounts within six weeks.
The bench directed authorities to furnish detailed records of fees collected, recruitment boards, employee salaries, surplus fund utilization, and teaching standards.
The court further instructed regulatory bodies like the National Medical Commission and Bar Council to provide inspection affiliation details and faculty databases before the next hearing on November 19.
