Children account for half of suspected mpox cases in Guinea-Bissau

Guinea-Bissau is facing its first recorded mpox outbreak, with children under the age of 15 accounting for 23 of the 46 suspected cases reported during the event.

Of the 23 suspected pediatric cases, 16 involve children aged between birth and four years, who face a higher risk of severe complications from the virus.

By August 17, 2026, health authorities confirmed seven adult cases, prompting UNICEF to request over $150,000 in emergency funding to strengthen disease surveillance and contact tracing.
