The U.S. Senate advanced a Russia sanctions bill on Tuesday that authorizes the president to impose tariffs of up to 100% on major Russian energy buyers, including India.
India's imports of Russian crude oil surged 34% in June 2026 to a record high worth €4.5 billion, accounting for 36% of Russia's crude export revenue.
The bill, which passed a procedural vote 86-12, could complicate ongoing bilateral trade negotiations between Washington and New Delhi that aim to reduce tariffs to 18%.
