Conservationist Urges Supreme Court Panel to Halt Assam Elephant Transfers

An Assam-based conservationist urged the Supreme Court-appointed High-Powered Committee to halt the transfer of four captive elephants from Assam to Tamil Nadu.

The petitioner also sought a probe into the transfer of these animals and a fifth elephant, a five-year-old female named Durga, moved to the Madurai Meenakshi Amman Temple.

The letter questioned the legality, purpose, and welfare of transporting the elephants and noted that private individuals own 752 elephants in Assam.
