Physicians Frederick G. Banting and John J.R. Macleod received the 1923 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for discovering insulin.
Their research at the University of Toronto demonstrated that pancreatic extracts could lower blood sugar levels in diabetic animals and humans.
In January 1922, purified insulin was successfully administered to 14-year-old Leonard Thompson, transforming the treatment and management of diabetes.
