Right to Information data showed that several Indian Institutes of Technology operate with significantly fewer mental health counsellors than UGC recommendations.
While the UGC recommends one counsellor for every 500 students, IIT Kharagpur recorded a ratio of one for every 1,136 students, and IIT-BHU recorded one for every 4,750.
Among the surveyed institutions, only IIT Ropar reported having a sufficient number of counsellors to meet the mental health guidelines.
