The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India issued a non-compliance notice and banned sales of Nestle's 'Low Fat Dairy Whitener' after food analyst reports declared a sample from New Delhi's The Lalit unsafe and substandard.
Clinical nutritionist Kanikka Malhotra noted that dairy whiteners use phosphate additives as stabilisers and emulsifiers which are absorbed almost completely, posing health risks for individuals with underlying kidney conditions or diabetes.
Nestle stated that its product is fully compliant and that the laboratory readings reflected total phosphorus including natural milk content, while regulators continue adjudication.
