U.S. Expresses Concerns Over Australia’s Draft Social Media Regulations

The U.S. embassy in Canberra published a statement on September 22 warning that Australia's draft social media regulations target U.S. headquarters.

The Online Safety Amendment Bill seeks to protect children from online harms and penalise non-compliant firms with fines up to Aus$109 million.

The U.S. criticized forced chronological feeds and opt-in recommendation systems, stating the rules could facilitate censorship of protected speech.
