Satellite data analyzed by UCLA researchers identified 70 methane plumes across Turkiye's 10 highest-emitting waste sites, with the Seymen landfill west of Istanbul ranking among the world's largest emitters.
Turkiye, which is the world's fifth-biggest emitter of methane from solid waste, will host the COP31 climate summit in Antalya from November 9 to 20.
Turkiye's Environment Ministry disputed the satellite data, stating it lacked continuous measurements, while highlighting that the national waste recovery rate rose to 37.53% in 2025.
