Jaishankar urges Iran to avoid targeting commercial shipping

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar held a telephonic conversation with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on July 31, 2026, to express deep concerns over regional hostilities.

India has facilitated the return of 2,557 Indian nationals from Iran since February 2026, with approximately 7,000 Indians currently remaining in the country.

Jaishankar strongly urged that commercial shipping and seafarers be spared from attacks, following recent incidents involving Indian crew members on vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.
