Frankfurt Airport Monitors Mosquitoes After Fatal Malaria Outbreak

German health authorities installed mosquito traps at Frankfurt Airport after six workers contracted malaria tropica since July, resulting in two deaths and four hospitalizations.

The Robert Koch Institute suspects the infections were caused by Anopheles stephensi mosquitoes transported on aircraft from regions like sub-Saharan Africa, where 90% of global malaria cases occur.

Fraport is analyzing collected insects in an Antwerp laboratory to assess risks, while officials confirmed that malaria cannot spread directly between people and the immediate danger remains low.
