Democratic socialist Melat Kiros won Colorado's 1st Congressional District in the US House of Representatives on Tuesday, becoming the first Gen Z woman elected to Congress.
The Associated Press called the race following a decisive victory for the 29-year-old Ethiopian-born politician, who secured a commanding lead in the heavily Democratic district covering most of Denver.
Kiros will succeed longtime Democratic Representative Diana DeGette, whom she previously defeated in the June primary after campaigning on progressive economic reforms and reducing corporate influence.
