Centre Deploys Team to Tackle Chandipura Virus Outbreak

The Chandipura virus has caused 82 deaths out of 245 recorded cases of Acute Encephalitis Syndrome in India between June and mid-August 2024.

First identified in 1965, the virus is transmitted by sandflies and has claimed over 300 lives in India across various outbreaks over the last six decades.

With no approved vaccine or antiviral treatment available, health authorities are focusing on early detection and monitoring insect populations to curb the spread of the neurological disease.
