Bulgarian acting President Iliana Iotova won the presidential runoff vote on Sunday, according to exit polls projecting her to receive between 50.7% and 52.5% of the vote.
Iotova, a supporter of EU and NATO membership who advocates for peace in Ukraine through negotiations, defeated banker and former caretaker Prime Minister Andrey Gyurov.
The election took place amid heightened security concerns in the region following recent Black Sea drone strikes that left 21 people missing.
