Total seat capacity across the Indian Institutes of Technology rose by 13.4% from 16,598 in 2022 to 18,826 in 2026, marking an addition of 2,228 seats according to JEE Advanced data.
Female-only supernumerary seats more than doubled over the same period, climbing from 1,567 in 2022 to 3,776 in 2026 and accounting for 20.1% of total capacity.
The supernumerary policy was initially introduced in 2018 to improve women's representation in IITs by creating extra seats without reducing the regular gender-neutral pool.
