The Reserve Bank of India rejected Tata Sons’ application to surrender its Non-Banking Finance Company licence and directed the Tata Group holding company to prepare for immediate public listing.
Under a 2022 circular, large NBFCs were asked to list based on scale-based regulation, but Tata Sons applied for de-registration as a charitable-trust-owned core investment company that does not mobilise public funds.
The imminent listing will subject Tata Sons to enhanced governance and disclosures, arriving amid leadership transition challenges following Chairman N. Chandrasekaran's decision not to seek reappointment.
