French Court Upholds Assisted Dying Law

France's Constitutional Council upheld a law legalising assisted dying for patients with incurable, terminal illnesses, while simultaneously striking down a separate bill banning social media for under-15s.

The assisted dying legislation, passed by the National Assembly last month with 291 votes in favour and 241 against, allows medical support for those suffering from untreatable, constant physical or psychological pain.

President Emmanuel Macron has requested Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu to draft new, legally robust social media legislation after the court ruled the previous version failed to protect privacy and freedom of expression.
