Former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee approached the Supreme Court to challenge the Election Commission's decision barring her faction from using the original TMC name and symbol.
The ECI allotted the name Democratic Trinamool Congress with an envelope symbol to the rival faction, while Banerjee's group was designated Mamata All India Trinamool Congress with a football player symbol.
Banerjee announced that her faction would opt out of the Nandigram bypoll on October 6 and support Congress candidate Milan Pradhan to back opposition unity.
