Kazakhstan Holds Snap Parliamentary Elections Under New System

Kazakhstan held snap parliamentary elections on Sunday for its new 145-seat unicameral legislature, a move expected to consolidate President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev’s rule following constitutional reforms.

Seven political parties are contesting the vote, including the newly formed Adilet party, which is expected to win a majority after the dissolution of the long-dominant Amanat party.

International observers from the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, comprising nearly 80 members from 30 countries, are monitoring the election process in the nation of 21 million people.
