Gujarat Lung Cancer Cases Rise Amid Expanding Tobacco Cultivation

The Gujarat Cancer & Research Institute recorded 4,830 lung cancer patients between 2021 and 2025, with annual cases climbing from 813 to 1,133 over that period.

Despite a central government crop diversification push, Gujarat's tobacco cultivation area and production increased by approximately 10% in FY26 compared to FY23 levels.

Data shows that 81.4% of the registered lung cancer patients were men, while the state accounted for nearly 45% of India's total tobacco output in FY25.
