Dr. P S Shajahan of Government Medical College, Kollam, advises that influenza presents with sudden high fever and respiratory symptoms, unlike dengue which causes severe joint pain and low platelets.
Routine H1N1 testing is unnecessary for every fever, as clinical evaluation and standard blood work are sufficient for diagnosis and management in most cases.
Patients remain contagious for three to five days after fever subsides, and antiviral prophylaxis is reserved only for high-risk groups like the immunocompromised, pregnant women, and those over 65.
