Authorities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo confirmed an Ebola outbreak in the northwestern Sud-Ubangi province after laboratory tests identified the Bundibugyo ebolavirus in a patient sample.
As of September 8, the DRC has recorded 6,843 confirmed Ebola cases and 3,310 deaths, resulting in a case fatality rate of 48.4 percent since the current epidemic began in May.
Acting governor Jean-Rene Galekwa Vundawe announced that local officials are now strengthening surveillance and treatment protocols to interrupt transmission chains in the newly affected region.
