
The UDISE+ 2025-2026 report shows a structural shift as government schools lost 8.6 million students while private unaided schools gained over 88 lakh enrollments.
Although the secondary dropout rate declined from 13.8% in 2022-2023 to 7% in 2025-2026, total school enrollment fell from 24.80 crore to 24.72 crore in the same period.
The Union Budget share for education dropped from 4.6% in 2013-2014 to 2.5% in 2025-2026, even as over 8,000 government schools closed within a single year.
