The UK Met Office warned that the 2026 El Nino event is expected to be the most intense in over a century, with sea surface temperatures potentially rising by more than 3C.
The event is projected to cause severe droughts in South America and the West Pacific, while increasing the likelihood of 2027 becoming the hottest year on record globally.
Recent climate impacts include wildfires burning over 200,000 hectares in Indonesia and the displacement of at least 325,000 people across Spain and France.
