BCG Vaccine Shows Potential for Alzheimer's Prevention in Exploratory Study

An exploratory clinical study published in 'Communications Medicine' suggests the century-old BCG vaccine may help prevent Alzheimer's by reprogramming the brain's immune system and improving related biomarkers.

The one-year trial involved 23 adults aged 55 and older, with researchers observing favourable changes in amyloid-beta levels and immune cell responses in participants who received two intradermal doses.

Dr. Mahesh Chandra Kodali of Harvard Medical School noted that India's universal BCG program offers a unique opportunity for large-scale trials to confirm if this low-cost vaccine can serve as an affordable Alzheimer's intervention.
