The FSSAI proposed mandatory red hexagonal warning labels for packaged foods high in sugar, salt, and saturated fat in a compliance affidavit filed before the Supreme Court on Friday.
The two-phase implementation plan will initially target products high in two or more specified nutrients, later expanding to include items high in any single nutrient of concern.
The proposal follows criticism from the Supreme Court regarding the regulator's failure to provide clear, interpretive labels to help consumers, particularly children, make informed dietary choices.
