Following a nudge from the Supreme Court, the Lok Sabha Secretariat has issued formal disqualification notices to 20 rebel Trinamool Congress (TMC) MPs, requiring them to submit their responses within seven days.
The legal action stems from a petition filed by TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee, alleging that the MPs violated the party whip during critical parliamentary sessions earlier this year.
The Speaker's office has set a strict one-week deadline for the rebels to explain their conduct, a move that could significantly alter the party's strength in the lower house if the disqualifications are upheld.
