A New Mexico judge ruled that Meta must pay $25 billion to the state after a jury found the company deceived users regarding the Cambridge Analytica scandal.
Meta criticized the ruling as a tax on speech that makes it all but impossible to do business in New Mexico, stating it would appeal.
The penalty follows a prior agreement by Meta to pay $18 billion to settle claims brought by 48 other states related to Cambridge Analytica.
