Six people died and 107 were rescued after the passenger ferry Virgo Transport 8 lost contact in the Java Sea amid bad weather.

The vessel was carrying 243 people from Surabaya to Banjarmasin when it issued a distress report early Sunday morning.

A joint task force of 280 personnel deployed ships and a helicopter to search for the 130 remaining missing passengers.
