India Rejects Hague Court Ruling on Indus Waters Treaty

India has formally rejected a Permanent Court of Arbitration ruling that declared the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty fully binding, asserting the tribunal lacks jurisdiction over India's sovereign infrastructure decisions.

The court ordered India to limit construction on the Ratle Hydro-Electric Plant in Kashmir, prohibiting work on the dam wall and power intake structure until 90 days after a neutral expert's decision.

Pakistan, which relies on the treaty's river systems for 80 percent of its agricultural land, welcomed the interim measures and is currently reviewing the tribunal's details to determine its next steps.
