Researchers at the ICMR-National Institute of Nutrition in Hyderabad found that lead exposure impairs the lysosomal waste-clearing system within human nerve cells.
The study revealed that combined exposure to lead and amyloid-beta peptides significantly reduces cell survival and destabilizes lysosomal membranes compared to individual exposure.
Head of Cell Biology Suresh Challa stated that these findings suggest environmental lead exposure may amplify cellular stress and increase vulnerability to neurodegenerative disorders like Alzheimer’s disease.
