An exceptional warming of sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern Pacific has established a strong El Nino condition.
The Niño 3.4 index has strengthened to an average of +2.51 degrees Celsius, well above the El Nino threshold.
Meteorologists note that while El Nino typically favors a wetter northeast monsoon in southern India, its effects can be modulated by other climate drivers.
