Google signed a four-year agreement to purchase 1 million carbon credits through 2030 from Mitti Labs, targeting methane emissions reduction across 100,000 hectares of rice farms in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana.
The project aims to cut methane emissions by 50% and irrigation water use by 40% across smallholder farms using Mitti Labs' GeoAI platform, which tracks crop growth using satellite radar imagery.
The deal helps Google address its rising emissions, which grew 18% year-over-year to 14.5 million metric tons in 2025, following a previous January 2025 deal with Varaha for 100,000 tons of biochar credits.
