COP31 Hosts Australia And Türkiye Face Scrutiny Over Fossil Fuels

Australia and Türkiye will jointly host the UN climate change conference COP31 in Antalya in November, with Türkiye presiding and Australia overseeing negotiations.

Both countries rely heavily on fossil fuels, with Australia serving as a major global exporter and both nations generating over 80% of domestic energy from coal, gas, and oil.

Despite growing international momentum for fossil fuel phase-out roadmaps, neither host government included transitioning away from fossil fuels as a priority theme on the official agenda.
