More than 1,500 Israeli filmmakers and industry figures signed a petition defending documentary directors Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor after Culture Minister Miki Zohar threatened to revoke their citizenship.
The backlash follows their documentary NAZA winning the Special Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival after receiving a 24-minute standing ovation for featuring testimony from 24 Israeli military and intelligence insiders.
The petition rejects accusations that the filmmakers sought to damage Israel's reputation and warns that official rhetoric creates physical threats to the directors' safety.
