A U.S. federal court sentenced 74-year-old Samir Ousman Alsheikh, a former high-ranking Syrian security official under Bashar al-Assad, to 60 years in prison.

Alsheikh was convicted in March of three counts of torture, one count of conspiracy to commit torture at Adra Prison, and immigration fraud regarding green card procurement.

Federal prosecutors noted that Alsheikh is the highest-ranking former member of Assad's government to be tried and convicted in person outside Syria.
